The unprecedented circumstances of 2020/2021 presented a challenge and a unique opportunity for innovation as a speech broadcaster.  While presenting Galway Bay FM’s flagship current affairs programme Galway Talks, I sought to produce stories that would connect with listeners, many of whom were living through a challenging period of isolation.
What follows is a sample of live interviews and packages illustrating the listener driven issues that had Galway talking during that time. Ordinary people share their extraordinary stories with me. Some related to the pandemic, others not. New perspectives which generate greater local debate.
Creatively I sourced previously unheard voices such as nine year old Galway city schoolgirl Kiri Flaherty, who shares her fears and hopes in a time of such uncertainty. At the other end of the spectrum, a couple in their seventies who run a rural Galway pub tell of their unique struggle and the unseen effects of the year that was.
My approach was to ensure that the interviewee was the central voice in the story. My own voice may feature less than in other entries you will hear. Instead I used my interview and editing skills to allow the interviewee to tell the story. Extensive research and production ensured each story was factual, engaging and entertaining.
These stories provided a catalyst for greater debate. Previously unheard voices drove the local news agenda and saw listeners connect with their local radio station through voices that they could identify and empathise with, in a time of intense isolation.
